A young patron leans out of his family’s vehicle to cheerfully place money in the bucket held by Brent Bair, a Lancaster-Fairfield County Charity Newsies. The young man’s donation supports this uniquely local charity’s annual event – ‘hawking’ Special Edition Lancaster-Eagle Gazette Lancaster-Fairfield County Charity Newsies’ newspapers Saturday December 14, 2013. Newsies thank the Lancaster-Eagle Gazette – the local daily paper has published and donated our annual newspaper since 1936 – this year about 13,000.
Upwards of 100 Newsies fanned out all across Fairfield County on a miserably cold and wet day to raise money to be spent exclusively on less fortunate Fairfield County families, especially families with children. Every penny raised - 100% - is for local charity. Mike Daubenmire, 2013 2nd vice president, chaired the event.
The proceeds of this annual ‘Paper Drive’ helps defray the cost of 375 Christmas food baskets to be delivered by local Newsies Saturday December 21st. Each food basket will generally feed a family of four for about two weeks. Each box weighs more than 65 pounds and is filled with ham, bacon, eggs, bread, potatoes, fruit, vegetables, chocolate and white milk and Ralston cereal along with select sundry items. It isn’t unusual for Newsies, their friends and family to make sure most of the baskets also have gender specific toys.
Newsies thank Dan Bay and Carnival Foods for their generous year round support and Lancaster’s U.S. Corrugated for manufacturing, stenciling then donating our boxes.
Readers can still donate by sending a check payable ‘Charity Newsies’ to P.O. Box 1443, Lancaster.
